"is it always this peaceful over here at retail?"
this was a question asked by a gro. it may pass off as a simple and harmless question. but the more i think about it, the more i get offended. why? is the retail department considered to be the most useless of the whole hotel? probably.
after being attached for nearing 1.5 month now, i still commit mistakes while the others are coping well. well of course they are doing well without all the paper works and pressured stress when your cashier amount doesn't tally, constantly worrying about the finance department dropping by for an audit.
retail may seem easy. but let me list what are the things we have to do: customer engagement, paperwork, manning the retail alone, running up and down to the b1 store to replenish or take new stocks, cashiering duties, dealing with difficult suppliers, memorizing of different items that belongs to different suppliers, due to the lack of spaces, we have to also memorize where the different cases for jewelries are kept as they are chucked at many different areas, setting up/storing of items at the end of day, ordering of items when they run low, gift wrapping, answering phone calls, transferring of items to other departments, doing of settlement by having to go get mod's card, going all the way to the back office and back to retail to self-print and back to back office to have them sign the settlement and cash envelope, dropping of keys and float. these are so far what i can think of but i am sure there are more.
now that im done with the responsibilities of retail, let me touch on the gros's duties: customer engagement, memorizing of info about the whole hotel and the nearby malls and routes and if they are unclear, they can head to the concierge, opening of doors and greeting guests, walking them while conversing casually, sometimes assist them with their luggage, talk on the walkie-talkie, and basically customer engagement and still, customer engagement. there is really nothing more i can think of but prolly there are more that idk but i can definitely bet there is nothing as much as ours.
no stress or anything from the finance department, no paperwork, shift is not alone (you can always chat with the other gro opening the door), no cashiering duties, no stress from suppliers, only requests from guests, you report to work there straight and there's no such thing as hand over or things of any sort to do you just start your duty straight. no need to take any micros recertification, no pressure, no stress from suppliers, don't have to deal with money.
so after listing out all that i've said, let me ask another question.
"whose job is easier? retail or gro? whose job sounds and seems more like a glorious kinda job?"
if i were to stay on after internship, i will ask for a transfer to gro. trust me, no one will ever want to transfer to retail. know why? cos they say it's useless and boring. come, i dare you to try.
& of course, if i were given a choice i wouldn't have chosen retail either. but who am i to choose?
